Bell was founded in 1946 in south Chicago. Frank Belleck (operations), hence
the Bell name, and Harry Stllman (financial) were the original partners of
Bell.
The first product manufactured was a no shock receptacle, “no shok”.
The line was expanded to included boxes and covers much like we are still using
today. Bell was the first company to market weatherproof products. The term “Bell
Box” is used as the generic term for a weatherproof box.
Bell products were originally sold through electrical distribution
and retail establishments such as Sears, J C Penney and Woolworth’s.
In 1971, Square D acquired Bell. Square D purchased Fullman of Latrobe PA
thus adding floor boxes to the Bell line. Around 1976, Rodale of Emmaus PA,
a wiring device manufacturer was acquired. In 1980, Square D moved to Fogelsville
PA.
Bell became a Hubbell company in 1986.
